ICYMI: D’Esposito (NY-04) Empowers Election-Denying Extremists, Turns Back on Voters With Support of MAGA’s Voter Intimidation Act

D’Esposito Used the Introduction of the Big Lie Bill to Spread Conspiracy Theories About Voter Fraud

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Congressman Danny D’Esposito (NY-04) and fellow MAGA House Republicans unveiled their extreme anti-voter elections bill that attacks Americans’ right to vote while elevating the influence of the ultra-wealthy and corporations in our democracy. This bill continues Republicans’ ceaseless efforts, highlighted by the January 6th attacks on the Capitol, to further undermine elections and reinforce their own power.

At a time when record numbers of young people and people of color are participating in our democracy, this Big Lie bill would disenfranchise millions by enacting draconian anti-voter policies that directly contradict what Americans have already said they support to protect their freedom to vote. The extreme bill also furthers the power of special interests and corporate mega-donors over the voice of voters, despite waning trust in our democracy, and turns Washington, DC into a legislative playground for Congressman D’Esposito and his fellow MAGA Republicans to experiment with voter suppression measures.

In last night’s series of votes on the voter intimidation bill, D’Esposito and his fellow MAGA Republicans showed how far they’re willing to go. D’Esposito, along with all Republicans on the committee, voted against an amendment that would protect Americans’ fundamental right to vote, an amendment that gave active military members more information about how to vote while serving overseas, an amendment that established early voting across the country, and even an amendment confirming President Biden had won the 2020 presidential election.

“Congressman D’Esposito’s support for an extreme bill that aims to guarantee his own party’s power at the expense of America’s democracy is the very definition of shameful,” said José Morales, Jr., spokesperson for the House Accountability War Room. “D’Esposito has proven he would rather further empower election-denying extremists and his ultra-wealthy donors than protect the vote of his constituents he was elected to serve. If D’Esposito cares about the future of our democracy and protecting the vote for New Yorkers, he must denounce his party’s voter-intimidation bill and stand with true efforts to expand and protect our right to a free and fair election. As his New York colleague Rep. Morelle said this week, they must do better.”
