ICYMI: GOP Calls Grow to Shutdown Government If Extreme Demands Aren’t Met

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, the House Freedom Caucus held a press conference discussing their willingness to shut down the government if their extreme demands aren’t met. This is part of a growing trend of House Republicans saying they are comfortable with shutting down the government in the upcoming appropriations fights:

  • Punchbowl: “House Republicans are on a path to force a government shutdown this fall. If you talk to senior GOP leadership figures privately, they’ll admit this.”
  • Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MT) told Punchbowl “I’m not afraid of a shutdown.”
  • Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said a shutdown “doesn’t bother him.”
  • Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) said “all that [a shutdown] really hurts is the military and those types of areas that is an unintended consequence.”
  • Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) said “We should not fear a government shutdown” when discussing how far they’d push to secure their extreme demands to cut veterans health care services and restrict access to abortion rights in the appropriations process. [VIDEO]
