[RELEASE] – House GOP’s Police Week Actions: More Empty Promises After Vote To Gut Public Safety Funds
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Extreme House Republicans are patting themselves on the back during National Police Week, pushing legislation and hosting events in an attempt to show their so-called support for American law enforcement. But for all their fervor and enthusiasm, the reality is that their declarations are hollow. It’s clear they’re more interested in playing politics than ensuring the safety and security of our communities and willing to jeopardize the vital resources necessary to uphold the rule of law.
In a stunning display of hypocrisy, these same Members have shamelessly voted for legislation that would have devastated funding for federal law enforcement, courts, and prisons—essentially gambling with Americans’ safety. In fact, the Default on America Act would have delivered a crushing blow to law enforcement and public safety, slashing nearly $17 billion in funding for crucial programs.
Here’s what the MAGA House Republicans’ poisonous vote would have done to Americans’ safety:
-
Department of Justice: Over $8 billion in cuts, jeopardizing nearly 30,000 law enforcement jobs, and hindering the DOJ’s ability to combat crime.
-
State, Local, and Tribal Law Enforcement: Nearly $1 billion in grants gutted, leaving communities vulnerable and underserved.
-
FBI: $1 billion in funding cuts, crippling efforts to solve violent crimes, conduct background checks, and combat terrorism.
-
Violence Against Women Act: $150 million slashed from programs created by VAWA, disproportionately harming women in Native communities.
-
Drug Enforcement Administration and the ATF: Hundreds of millions of dollars axed, undermining efforts to tackle drug-related crime and firearms trafficking.
And it doesn’t stop there:
-
Border Security: Despite endless rhetoric about the border, MAGA Republicans voted to cut over $5.8 billion in funding from agencies like Customs and Border Protection and ICE.
-
Science and Technology: Nearly $200 million in cuts to DHS research & development programs, hindering advancements that could bolster national security.
-
Support Programs for Vulnerable Americans: Cuts to Medicaid, housing assistance, and social security programs would exacerbate economic hardships and increase the risk of crime.
America’s law enforcement officers and the people they protect deserve better and we call on Congress and the general public to hold the extreme House GOP accountable for prioritizing scoring political points—instead of truly supporting those who protect and serve our communities.
