REMINDER: It Was Mike Johnson and House Republicans Who Voted to Cut Funding for Border Patrol Agents

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With Speaker Johnson set to speak about the border tomorrow, it’s critical to remember it was House Republicans – including Speaker Johnson – who voted this Congress to cut funding for border patrol agents. H.R. 2811, which 217 House Republicans voted for, would have caused a “reduction in CBP frontline law enforcement staffing levels of up to 2,400 agents and officers,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

“The American People will not be fooled as Speaker Johnson and House Republicans try to squirm their way out of their now inconvenient vote to cut funding for thousands of border patrol agents,” said Albert Fujii, spokesperson for House Accountability War Room. “Speaker Johnson’s agenda is dangerous, wildly out of touch and will have lasting ramifications if we do not come together and reject MAGA extremism once and for all.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

  • H.R. 2811 – the Default on America Act or Limit Save Grow Act – would have caused a “reduction in CBP frontline law enforcement staffing levels of up to 2,400 agents and officers.” (DHS)
  • H.R. 2811 could have forced CBP to “implement a hiring freeze, which would impact the agency’s ability to hire the additional 300 Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) provided for in the FY 2023 budget and the 150 CBP Officers (CBPOs) and BPAs requested in the FY 2024 Budget. A hiring freeze would also result in attrition of frontline law enforcement officers by perhaps as much as 1,000 CBPOs and 1,400 BPAs.” (DHS)
